The Goat Blocks represent a diverse, mixed-use urban center that is open to all who want to live and gather among myriad eastside amenities.
In the 1920’s, farmers and gardeners came together to form a co-op across two city blocks in SE Portland. This became home to a daily bazaar where retailers, farmers and wholesalers met to do business together. It stood for industry and community and became a vibrant gathering place.
Killian Pacific purchased the site in 1999, and solicited feedback from the Buckman Neighborhood that the community need was a grocery store, daily goods and services and market rate housing. The Central Eastside Industrial Council also shared that off-street parking would be strongly desired. Killian held the property for many years while they intentionally planned a mixed use development that would reflect this feedback, heritage and spirit, while also evolving the Buckman neighborhood and the Central Eastside Industrial District.
In 2012, Killian brought in a herd of goats to trim the grass in a way that was both economical and environmentally friendly. Killian retained the goats on the property for several years. The site became an unexpected urban petting zoo that people of all ages came to visit. The goats eventually migrated to the Lents neighborhood of Portland and continue to be cherished. From this experience, neighbors affectionately dubbed the lot the "Goat Blocks”, and as the area continues to change, that name has stuck.
Today, the Goat Blocks represent a diverse, mixed-use urban center that is open to all who want to live and gather among myriad eastside amenities. It boasts 347 dwelling units among a diverse mix of twenty different purveyors of goods and services - including offerings like Market of Choice and Orchard Supply Hardware, as well as restaurants and services.

As it has evolved, it is once again a place for people to come together. We invite you to join the community and explore all the Goat Blocks and the neighborhood has to offer.
